THE LORD'S SUPPER
God designed communion to be more than eating some bread and drinking the fruit of the vine. God designed communion to be a spiritual experience. Therefore, we must elevate communion back to being the spiritual experience that God intended. How?
We must connect our communion to scriptural exhortation. When we connect communion to scriptural exhortation, we discover that communion takes us from the cross to the throne. The cross brings death to the old way, but the throne brings life in the new. Help for living the new life is at the throne of God (Hebrews 4:12-14). Jesus is seated at the throne (Hebrews 8:1). Therefore, God invites us to focus on Jesus who is on the throne (Hebrews 12:1-2).
(1) The church is at the throne (Revelation 1:1-4).
(2) The throne is the victory seat of the believers (Revelation 3:21).
(3) Continuous worship takes place at the throne (Revelation 4:1-11).
(4) The new song was sung at the throne (Revelation 5:1-14)
(5) Praise of worship shouted for salvation is at the throne (Revelation 7:9).
(6) The new song of the redeemed is sung at the throne (Revelation 14:3).
Q. When I attend an earlier assembly and partake of the bread and the fruit of the vine of the Lord's Supper, should I also partake again if I stay and attend a later assembly?
A. Yes you should!
Objection: I have already observed it once today.
Response: You have sung once, you have prayed once, and you have heard the word once. The fact of having done these once does not restrict doing them again. What is wrong with remembering the Lord's death more than once per day? Therefore, OBJECTION OVERRULED!
Objection: But if I commune again why not give again?
Response: Giving is an expression of worship that is limited quantitatively; for there is a limit to the amount that you can give (2 Corinthians 8:10-12). You can give all that you are able to give at once; but, you cannot sing all that you can sing in one song. Neither can you think of all that you can think in one thought. Certainly, you cannot remember all that you can remember in one remembrance. Therefore, OBJECTION OVERRULED!
Objection: Since I have already partaken of the bread and the fruit of the vine at an earlier assembly, I now only need to think about the essence of the Lord's Supper.
Response: Why not always participate in the observance of the Lord's Supper that includes partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine each time it is offered. Scripture nowhere indicates that a limited observance of the Lord's Supper meets God's approval. If just thinking about the essence of the Lord's Supper is adequate at the later assembly, why would it not also be adequate at the earlier assembly? If partaking of the elements of the Lord's Supper serves a redemptive purpose at an earlier assembly, why would it not also serve that same value at the later assembly? Participating in the ceremony is inherently connected to the essence. Therefore, OBJECTION OVERRULED!
When the unlearned attend our assembly and see only a few observe the Lord's Supper, aren't they likely to believe that there exists within the church some type of hierarchy such as exists among the so-called Jehovah's Witnesses? Within their organization they have taught that only the 144,000 people are in the "heavenly class." Therefore, when they commune, all others who are just in the "earthly class" do not partake of the elements.
At each Sunday assembly, we will offer the elements to everyone. I encourage each believer to fully participate in the fullness of the Lord's Supper. Let the glory of the Lord rise among us!
